Hey, what's up everybody? It's Mr.Wong here. Here's our final episode of "China's Noteworthy Achievements", let's begin!

By 2017, China has undoubtedly become the world-leading mobile payment market. Whether it’s in the most developed countries such as the United States, Japan and European countries, it’s unlikely that you can pay almost any bills with your smartphone and QR codes as convenient as here in  China. To a degree, you can really live a no-cash life. So how exactly did China make such a great achievement? As a matter of fact, it is the result of concerted efforts of many enterprises and one of the dominant players is Alibaba's Alipay 支付宝. Alipay overtook PayPal(暂无中文译名 ~ 一电子货币交易系统) as the world's largest mobile payment platform in 2013, by far the largest in the world.

Let's rewind back to 1995, that's the year when Jack Ma(马云) - the English teacher, went online for the very first time at a friend's home in Seattle. You might ask, "what did he search online?" He searched for "China" but nothing came up. He then said to himself, "If I can put Chinese companies on the internet and allow them to connect with business people in the U.S. and other countries, I could possibly create a really powerful business." Four years later after his first trip to the U.S, Jack Ma founded Alibaba with 17 co-founders in his own apartment. At the time, selling the internet was like trying to sell magic beans. And here was this guy, an interesting looking English teacher going door to door telling people that they should spend their money on his company which is the "internet". Ma would travel across China on road shows(巡回演出、或演讲等) where 100 or 200 people would show up and listen to him. He would talk about business and why they needed to get online. Jack Ma once said, "A lot of people who have dreams don't work hard; a lot of people who work hard don't have dreams. Being an entrepreneur, you should have dreams and work hard."

Today, Alibaba Group is already a Chinese multinational conglomerate(大型联合企业) specializing in e-commerce, retail, internet, AI and technology. It owns and operates a diverse array of businesses around the world in numerous sectors, and is named one of the world's most admired companies by the Fortune Magazine(美国《财富》杂志). As of June 2018, Alibaba's market cap.(market capitalization ~ 市场总值) stood at $542 billion. It is one of the top 10 most valuable and biggest companies in the world. Damn! That's crazy! By the way, have you guys heard that Jack Ma is going to step down and retire next year? Ma said on September 20 during an event at a World Economic Forum summit in Tianjin, "I don't want to die in the office, I'd rather die on the beach." Hahaha, alright, let's talk about the phrase of the day which is "Think big and aim high", let's check it out!
